DEX XI Workshop 2015

Big Surveys + Big Simulations = Big Science

Scope of workshop

New generations of observational surveys will generate large amounts of data that will open up new directions in astrophysical research. To interpret these observations, next generation simulations are needed that span large dynamic ranges in mass and density.

This workshop intends to bring together observers and theorists to discuss the future modelling needs and requirements together with observations in order to improve our understanding of the Universe. To this end, we not only invite contributions from researchers at Edinburgh and Durham, but this year also extend an invitation to our colleagues from the St Andrews Astronomy Group.

Key topics for discussion will include:

- The first galaxies.

- Galaxy evolution at intermediate redshifts.

- The study of z<0.5 galaxies with IFU surveys.

- Detecting the Large Scale Structure.

- Measuring Dark Energy.

- Modifying Gravity.

Programme

The workshop programme is now available here along with a list of talk abstracts.

Time

The workshop will take place on 8th and 9th January 2015 in the lecture theatre of the Institute for Astronomy at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh.

The workshop is planned to start on Thursday at 11.00 (with coffee from 10:00) and will end around 16.00 on Friday.

A buffet lunch will be served in the Stobie Room on both days for all registered participants, with informal break-out discussion sessions planned during the lunch breaks.

This year the DEX workshop will overlap with the Higgs Centre Symposium: Scientific Challenges and Big Computing also being held in Edinburgh on the 7th and 8th of January. The organisers of both meetings have worked to ensure there will be no timetable overlapping in astronomy talks so interested parties may also wish to register for this meeting separately.

Registration

Registration is now closed and we look forward to welcoming you in January. For any enquiries please email the LOC at DEX.Workshop[at]gmail.com.

This year there will be a £40 registration fee which will include the cost of dinner on Thursday night at Blonde Restaurant. In the event that participants wish to attend the meeting but not the dinner, the registration fee will be waived and if this is the case we ask that participants note this in the comments box provided on the registration form. The registration fee will be handled internally for Edinburgh participants and will be collected locally for Durham and St Andrews participants. It must be paid by the 15th of December. Further information regarding the payment of this fee and the local points of contact at the various institutions will be included in the receipt of registration.

The DEX meeting acknowledges financial support from the Institute for Astronomy and the Higgs Centre.
