DEX VIII Workshop 2012

Current and future large scale galaxy surveys for cosmology

Scope of workshop

Cosmology is rapidly maturing into a precision science, driven by increasingly rich data sets. Ever larger surveys, planned or underway, will yield new insights into the dark Universe, the nature of gravity, the initial conditions of structure formation, as well as the formation and evolution of galaxies and clusters. The shear amount of data and the envisaged measurement accuracy necessitate novel approaches to data reduction, analysis methods, and theoretical modelling.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together observational and theoretical expertise from Durham & Edinburgh to learn and discuss about these challenges, possible solutions, and the resulting science. We focus our discussion around current and future large area galaxy surveys (e.g. VST ATLAS/KIDS, CFHTLenS, PanSTARRS, PAU, GAMA, VIPERS, Euclid, LOFAR) that Edinburgh & Durham are exploiting and planning for.

Programme

The full workshop programme is now available! Note that the list of abstracts will only be available online.

Time

The workshop will start at 11:00 (coffee from 10:30) on Thursday 12th January 2012 and will finish around 16:00 on Friday 13th January.

The workshop is held in the Penthouse Suite in Collingwood College on Thursday and in the Derman Christopherson and Kingsley Barrett rooms in the Calman Learning Centre on Friday (both places are close to the Durham University Physics department). A campus map of Durham University can be found here (6: Collingwood College; 43: Calman Centre; 12: Physics Department).

Registration

Registration is now closed. Any queries should be addressed to DEX[at]roe.ac.uk.

Social Events

On Thursday evening, participants of the workshop have the opportunity to enjoy a workshop dinner in the Spice Lounge. The dinner costs are 30GBP per person.
