The high redshift Universe: reionisation and the rise of galaxies and AGN

First Announcement

Scope of workshop

Observations now routinely uncover massive galaxies and supermassive black holes at early epochs in the history of the Universe, which would seem, at first sight, hard to reconcile with hierarchical structure formation models. These objects may be intimately linked to the sources which drive the epoch of reionisation and which set an end to the so-called "Dark Ages". Hydrogen reionisation, which is complete around one billion years after the Big Bang, marks the start of observational astronomy and, thus, studying this period is fundamental to improving our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. Reionsation also has a key role to play in shaping the satellite population of the Milky Way.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together the observational and theoretical expertise from Durham & Edinburgh on these aspects of the high redshift universe (with other related contributions more than welcomed):

- Reionisation: from theory to observations

- Which sources reionised the Universe?

- Can massive galaxies and SMBH at early epochs be explained by hierarchical models?

- Is there a single epoch of reionisation? Does this event depend on environment?

- Can we constrain reionsation in the local Universe? (e.g. Milky Way satellites, HI mass function)

The workshop starts at 11:30 on Tuesday 7th September and finishes around 16:00 on Wednesday 8th September.

The workshop is held in the lecture theatre of the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. Directions on how to reach the Royal Observatory is given here, together with a zoomable map.


There is no formal registration fee. However, the cost of the conference dinner is to be paid by the participants. We are grateful to the IfA for providing the daily lunches.

On Tuesday evening, participants of the workshop have the opportunity to enjoy a workshop dinner in [a place still to be decided]. The dinner costs will be 25GBP, including (some) drinks.

If you register to attend the workshop dinner, please pay Peder Norberg (Edinburgh participants) or Lindsay Borrero (Durham participants) as soon as possible and no later than August 30th.
