DEX IX Workshop 2013

Physics of galaxy formation

Scope of workshop

With increasing evidence in favour of a hierarchical structure formation scenario, theoretical models of galaxy formation and evolution are now faced with a vast set of high quality data across all cosmic times, directly probing the physics of galaxy formation. Galaxy formation physics is observationally constrained by a increasingly comprehensive multi-wavelength view of the universe, nearing towards a complete census of star formation and revealing how galaxies of different masses were assembled. Models of galaxy formation therefore need to incorporate increasingly complex physical processes to satisfy all of the observational evidence.

This DEX meeting will bring together observers, theorists and instrumentalists from Edinburgh and Durham to discuss our current progress towards understanding the physics of galaxy formation. Key questions to be addressed will include:

- How are galaxy properties linked to those of their dark halos?

- What drives the formation of discs and of bulges?

- How do galaxies get their gas and process it into stars?

- What are the links between the central black hole and its surrounding galaxy?

- How do internal and external factors drive galaxy evolution?

- How do galaxies and central black holes affect their environment?

- What do the Milky Way and its neighbours tell us about galaxy formation?

- How and when did galaxy formation begin?

Programme

The preliminary workshop programme is now available. We also provide a list of abstracts, in electronic form only.

Time

The workshop will take place on January 10th and 11th 2013 at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh.
The workshop is planned to start on Thursday at 10.45h with coffee and will end around 16.00h on Friday.

Registration

Registration is now closed. Any queries should be addressed to DEX[at]roe.ac.uk.

Durham participants who have registered for the workshop dinner are kindly asked to pay their dinner contribution of £30 to Lindsay Borrero as soon as possible. Contributions by Edinburgh participants are centrally managed, so that no advance cash payment is required.

Social Events

On Thursday evening, participants of the workshop have the opportunity to enjoy a workshop dinner at Blonde Restaurant from 19.30h onwards.

Accommodation

The participants have to make their own way to the workshop from the various accommodations listed below.
