Applying for a Computing Account

Prior to the arrival of a new IfA member, the Line Manager should submit a helpdesk ticket requesting an account for the new employee or student.

The new employee or student will need to bring with them a completed Application for user account form when they go to the IT office to set their password. A glance at the form will also help in knowing what information to put in the helpdesk ticket.

Visitors

Three accounts exist on the UNIX systems, guest, guest1, and guest2. Each account has a quota of 10MB (and a file quota of 1000).

Any genuine visitor, who intends to be present at the Observatory for a period of a week or so, may request, through the member of staff he/she is visiting, use of one of these accounts. On arrival, the visitor (or the host) should contact a member of the COG, who will then assign a password for the appropriate account.

More details can be found in the internal documentation for visitor accounts .
