The first draft of the book is now available. It has the basic structure, and a draft of the first chapter apart from the exercises and further reading sections. Hopefully enough for people to get an idea and give us comments.
Astrotech Companion Book: Draft 2015-05-22
Comments and suggestions welcome via the AstroTech MOOC Forum.
As well as comments on the draft material so far, please do feel free to make more general comments/suggestions:
- Is the difficulty-level of the material right, assuming readers who are pretty similar to our MOOC students? Too hard, too easy?
- Is the level of detail right?
- As a MOOC student, do you feel it adds much having the companion book?
- Is it useful having glossary and index and bibliography, or are they really not necessary in a book like this?
- Do you like the look and feel?
- We have gone for a fixed-layout PDF book rather than a re-flowable ePub. This gives us more layout control, and makes the maths come out better. On the other hand, it may be harder to read on smart phones. Did we make the right choice?
- When its finished, we are thinking of selling it as an eBook on Amazon etc, which we can do at a low price (maybe £5). We could additionally go for a printed version, but that would inevitably cost more. Do you think that would be worth it?
