The Advantages of Resolution


Scope of workshop

Resolution plays a key role in many areas of extragalactic astrophysics. As new generations of instruments provide observers with an increasingly detailed view of galaxies near and far, ever more powerful simulations advance towards a refined understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. At the same time, comprehensive spectroscopic surveys are obtaining precise cosmological measurements of the Universe itself.

In an era of vast data archives and sophisticated computational resources, what are the big questions confronting us, and how do we take advantage of new advances in observations and theory to resolve these problems?

Following in the traditions of previous DEX workshops, this meeting intends to bring together observers and theorists to discuss advances in modelling and observational techniques in extragalactic astronomy. This year we would like to invite colleagues from four institutes - Durham, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Lancaster - with the aim of fostering collaborations between our respective research groups.

The theme is intentionally broad to encompass a range of research topics. These include, but are not limited to:

- New results from IFU surveys (MaNGA; KMOS etc.)

- Improvements in BAO/RSD detections

- Details of state-of-the-art theoretical simulations

- Energy Resolution in HEA

- High-z Precision Observations

- Next Generation Instrumentation

Dates and Times

DEX XIII will be held on Monday 9th - Tuesday 10th January 2017 in the Institute for Astronomy at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. The workshop is planned to start on Monday at 11:00 (registration and coffee from 10:30) and will end around 17:00 on Tuesday.

A buffet lunch will be served in the Stobie Room on both days for all registered participants, with informal break-out discussion sessions planned during the lunch breaks.

The workshop dinner will be held on Monday evening at Blonde restaurant in Edinburgh.
