I am Professor of Extra-Galactic Astronomy, and the current Head of the Institute for Astronomy, an institute within the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh.

I am an elected Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Institute of Physics. In recent years I have been awarded a European Research Council Advanced Grant (2010-2016) and a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2009-2014).

My research interests are in extragalactic astronomy and cosmology: galaxy formation and evolution, the cosmic history of star formation, the first galaxies and cosmic reionization, and the connection between the growth of galaxies and black holes.
