ALMA Images

ALMA – the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array – is a telescope built to detect radio waves. Based high in the Chilean Andes, it is made up of 66 dishes which can be moved over a 16km wide area. ALMA has helped astronomers to see stars, planets and galaxies – and even a black hole! – as never before

Alan, who was Head of UK ATC Software Engineering, talks about how we worked with an international team to deliver ALMA, and about the amazing science it’s doing now

Download our infographic to learn more about how telescope dishes work together to make very detailed pictures of things in the Universe

At the UK ATC, astronomers use ALMA data to look at how stars are born and how they die.
