Visiting FAQ

What time do you open?

We are only open for pre-booked groups and public events. Earliest admission for group visits is at 10am Monday to Friday. Our last admission times are 7pm, Monday – Thursday and 3pm on Fridays.

Can you send a risk assessment for our visit?

Yes, we can email you a copy of any risk assessments relevant to your visit to the Observatory, just get in touch at

How long does a visit last?

A visit is designed to last approximately 2 hours. We can adjust this slightly if your group wishes to stay for lunch or if you need to leave earlier. Alternatively, if your group would like to have a standard visit plus a rocket making workshop in the afternoon, we can arrange this. Your group would be charged double the normal price for this.

Is there somewhere to have lunch?

It is possible for groups to eat their packed lunch in our Deep Space Gallery. Please let us know when you book if you wish to stay for lunch.

Is there somewhere for a coach to park?

There is limited space for parking a coach at the top of the hill outside the Observatory. It is a public car park and as the area is very popular with dog-walkers, the car park can be very busy.

How much does it cost?

A standard public/uniformed group visit to the Observatory costs £5 for adults and £4 for children or concessions (students or over the age of 60). School groups are charged at £3 per child. Accompanying adults are free of charge for school visits and 1 in 8 adults are free for uniformed group visits e.g. Scouts, Brownies. Carers are free of charge on a one to one basis with the person they are accompanying..

How many adult helpers should we bring?

For primary school groups and uniformed groups we require a ratio of 1 adult per 8 children, for secondary school group visits we require 1 adult per 10 children.

What is the minimum/maximum group size?

Our minimum number for all group visits is 10. For school visits maximum group size is 40 including accompanying adults. For all other group visits the maximum is 30. If you have more than this in your group you will have to split the group into to 2 smaller groups and visit at different times.
