Publishing

The Observatory and Institute jointly publish the Edinburgh Astronomy Preprints series and all papers written by students must pass through the ROE internal refereeing system before they may be submitted to the journals and released as a preprint: five copies of the paper should be given to Adrian Webster, who coordinates the internal refereeing system.

Papers are generally submitted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, although another journal might be more appropriate in a particular situation. All journals give instructions to authors about the correct style to be used and the procedure for submitting papers. The main astronomical journals are currently developing a common style, as well as preparing for the submission of papers in TEXor LATEXformats via email, so the instructions to authors are under revision and it is advisable to consult the most recent number of the appropriate journal before submitting a paper.

Edinburgh Astronomy Preprints distributes copies of papers to 35 institutions around the world. See Dorothy Skedd (ATC - west wing) for details. A record of all published papers is being kept by Liz Gibson. Once a paper has been submitted details should be given to Liz. When the paper appears, the final reference should also be given to Liz.

In addition to paper, preprints are now published electronically. Firstly, papers are published on the ROE's WWW pages -- see John Peacock for details of who is handling this. Secondly, the Los Alamos preprint library, mirrored at Southampton, allows a wider audience to view new papers. This can be found on the Web at

http://xxx.soton.ac.uk

and includes instructions for submitting preprints electronically.
