The Royal Society of Edinburgh Cormack Bequest Committee are pleased to announce their annual Robert Cormack Bequest Meeting for 2008:

Origins of the Universe: from dark matter to life

This year the Robert Cormack Bequest meeting will be held at the Royal Society of Edinburgh on Monday April 28th. This annual one-day meeting is intended to enable astronomers and those interested in astronomy in Scotland to present, and to see, a broad selection of what is currently going on in Scottish astronomy. The meeting focuses primarily on research but also encompasses teaching and Public Understanding work.

Invited talks include:

"Meteorites and the transfer of life between planets"
Professor John Parnell (Aberdeen)

"International Heliophysical Year 2007-2009"
Dr Lyndsay Fletcher (Glasgow)

and the RSE Cormack Undergraduate/Postgraduate prize-winners:

"On the Proof of Dark Matter, the Law of Gravity, and the Mass of Neutrinos"
Mr Gary Angus (St Andrews) - Postgraduate prize-winner

"Cometary Impacts with the Sun"
Miss Laura Porter (Glasgow) - Undergraduate prize-winner

The purpose of this announcement is to request applications to present short contributed talks (~15 mins) or posters at the meeting. The Cormack meeting is designed to cover all areas of astronomy research being undertaken in Scotland, and contributions are requested covering all aspects of astronomy, from solar physics to studies of the high-redshift Universe. Oral contributions are particularly welcome from young scientists, especially PhD students and post-docs. Young scientists who present a poster at the event will be eligible for the poster prize presented on the day.

Registration for the event is free but, to allow us to cater properly for the event, all participants are asked to register on-line at http://www.roe.ac.uk/ifa/Meetings/Cormack08 . Those wishing to present a short contributed talk or poster should register before April 4th.

The meeting will be followed at 5.30pm by the Robert Cormack Bequest Lecture:
