The Eagle’s EGGs

The image on the left is a magnified view of protrusions from the trunks. Here we see evidence of propagating star formation, together with reasons to refine the theory. The astronomer’s who proposed the M16 observation explained the star formation process observed in this nebula using the concept of Evaporating Gaseous Globules or EGGs. All over this image we can see examples of EGGs at different stages of evolution.

Hot and intense UV light from the nearby stars heats the nebula causing the tenuous regions of the nebula to evaporate leaving behind the more solid regions.
