The first is predicated on efficient indexing and storage and is intended to provide very fast access on the most commonly requested search parameters. The advanced search would allow more complex queries but at the expense of a reduction in response time.

The Blackford Hill link to the outside world needs upgrading. Presently, the exisiting microwave link can handle 10 Mbit/s. In early 2002 a new fibre link will be established which will initially provide 100 Mbit/s upgradable to 1 Gbit/s. Within the ROE site, the core network currently runs at 1 Gbit/s and the existing archive server www-wfau has a 100 Mbit/s connection; these are reviewed and upgraded on a yearly basis.
