In 1828 the botanist Robert Brown noted that if tiny specks
of dust are observed in a liquid such as water, they are observed to move about randomly.
In 1905, Einstein showed that this motion is due to random
collisions of the molecules of the fluid with the dust particle.
Remarkably,
this was some of the first accepted evidence
for the reality of atoms
