AL portrait I am the Regius Professor of Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh. I work at the Institute for Astronomy, which together with the UK Astronomy Technology Centre makes up the Royal Observatory Edinburgh(ROE). The IfA is part of the School of Physics and Astronomy of the University.

The School of Physics and Astronomy is part of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA).

My research interests are in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), observational cosmology, survey astronomy, and e-science (the Virtual Observatory). To the left are links to various projects I am involved in, and overviews of my research interests. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

BOOK
Last year I published an undergraduate level textbook called "Astronomical Measurement : A Concise Guide", covering atmosphere, optics, detectors, spectrographs and some general concepts. Like all textbooks, its a bit expensive I am afraid, but if your university library has an online subscription to Springer e-books, you can get the PDF through them, and order a paperback version of $/euros/£24.99.

Your Daily Dose of Tao

Just for a hoot, and to prove I am still an old hippy at heart, here is a random chapter from Ron Hogan's snappy adaptation of the Tao Te Ching. To get a new chapter, press refresh on your browser.

You can download the complete thing from Ron Hogan's web page, and you can get the gadget from Simon Hudson's page.
