Head of Strategic Development
First Class Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from Trinity College Dublin in 1981. Formal Graduate Engineering training at GEC Turbine Generators Rugby, Warwickshire followed by 8 years at GEC Ferranti Avionics, working on the design of cockpit avionics including cameras, displays and Head-up Displays, finishing as Project Leader on the Mid Life Update for Tornado Head-up display.
Moved to the Royal Observatory Edinburgh as Project Manager/Technical Lead (and some Mechanical Design) of Michelle, a mid-IR imager spectrometer for UKIRT and Gemini. Promoted to Programme Manager role in 2000 responsible for oversight of all Project Managers, resource Allocation across projects, creation and implementation of a range of project management procedures. This has included trouble shooting on SCUBA 2, supporting JWST MIRI and other Phase A’s including HRNIRS and WFMOS studies for Gemini.
Took up current role in 2005 responsible for formulating the strategic development of the UK ATC, assessment of future projects and technology. Also responsible for overseeing the staff effort allocation process for current and future projects and responsible for production of the annual UK ATC Operating Plan and Report.
