Message From the Site Safety Advisor

This UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UKATC) Health and Safety Manual is a collection of policies, procedures and guidelines that have been established to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment for employees, visitors and the surrounding community. This manual is written for ALL employees to assist them in establishing and maintaining the minimum-risk work environment. Copies are available to any employee through the Site Safety Advisor.

In a research environment, a safety manual must keep pace with new programs and improved knowledge. Readers are encouraged to submit any suggestions for change to the Site Safety Advisor for review and possible implementation. The latest version of this Manual will be the one posted on the UKATC Intranet.

References to safety regulations are to the UK Health and Safety at Work Regulations, unless otherwise stated.

Emergency Situation

In Emergency Phone 222 (Lodge)

When reporting emergencies, reception is only open between 0830 and 1630 out side these times use the 9-999 method.

If the emergency is acute, or no reply from lodge, then dial (9) 999

Information to give the 999 dispatcher:

• Type of emergency: AMBULANCE, FIRE (Give a brief description of what happened. For example: person ill, person injured, etc.)
• Facility: Royal Observatory
• Address: Blackford Hill, Edinburgh, EH9 3HJ
• Location: The building you are in
• Call back number: 668 8(your 3 -number extension)
