ROE IT Support

Computers and the Internet have come to play a central role in astronomy. They are used for

• controlling telescopes and instruments during observation,
• processing and archiving observation data,
• performing theoretical calculations,
• publishing results and communicating with collaborators,
• computer aided design and engineering (CAD/CAE),
• management information services (MIS),
• office applications.

There is a colourful presentation about Computing in Astronomy available, which has been written for the Open Days in April 2000.

The Royal Observatory Edinburgh comprises the UK Astronomy Technology Centre of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, the Institute for Astronomy of the University of Edinburgh and the ROE Visitor Centre.
