I have always been keen to support links between the arts and science and astronomy seems to be one of those areas that manages to achieve this. I have set up a number of collaborations with the Edinburgh College of Art and in 2005 I organised a competition as part of the students' coursework to install an 'artwork' in the foyer of our new building, the Crawford Building.

From an initial sample of 24 pieces, 7 were selected for the final and the students built models of what it was they intended to display. These ranged from paintings and sculptures, through interactive audio displays to lasers traversing the site. Staff voted for their choice and the clear winner was Leo du Feu. He was then commissioned to produce his designs in the foyer, where they have been on display since 2006. The works are entitled "Through the Telescope".

Leo has gone on to tremendous success, with exhibitions across the UK and beyond.

Just another side to the Royal Observatory site that is not apparent at first sight.
