The Solar System

This section is divided into three main parts. Firstly, for general overviews of the solar system, there are many good multimedia tours. The second part highlights any current and/or recent things that are of interest with respect to the individual members of our system. Finally, there is a good selection of links concerning comets and asteroids.

General Resources

Windows to the Universe. A great tour from NASA around the solar system, and beyond. An excellent educational resource.
Views Of The Solar System. Another good tour of the Solar System containing over 200 pages of information and 1000 hi-res images. Articles, links, software and more.
The Nine Planets. An overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific knowledge of each of the planets and moons in our solar system.

Planet News

Venus

Cassini Fly-by of Venus. Close up images of Venus as the Cassini spacecraft uses the planet to assist its journey to Saturn, from Astronomy Picture of the Day.

Mars

Mars Pathfinder Fact Sheet. The mission is primarily an engineering demonstration of key technologies and concepts for eventual use in future missions to Mars employing scientific landers.
The Mars Global Surveyor. Launched in 1996 to investigate Mars' surface features, atmosphere, and magnetic properties.
Mars Global Surveyor finds Gullies. Suggesting that liquid water has seeped onto the surface in the geologically recent past.

Jupiter

Jupiter's bombardment by Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. Images of the impacts produced by the fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, when it ploughed into Jupiter in 1994.

Saturn

The Cassini Mission to Saturn and Titan. Launched in 1997, the Cassini spacecraft is on its way to Saturn via Venus, Earth and Jupiter.

Uranus

Uranus' New Moons. Two new moons of Uranus, provisionally known as Uranus XVI (S/1997 U 1) and Uranus XVII (S/1997 U 2), have been discovered.

Neptune

Dark Cloud in the Atmosphere of Neptune. Hubble finds a new dark spot on Neptune.

Pluto

Not much happening here at the moment, but NASA has plans for future missions.

Satellites and Space Exploration

NASA Human SpaceFlight NASA's main space exploration site, with links to the Shuttle and Space Station pages.
International Space Station Everything there is to know about the International Space Station. Includes real time graphics of where the ISS is in its orbit, and SkyWatch, NASA's calculator for predicting when satellites will be visible from your location.
JPASS Excellent (when you've got the hang of it) resource for calculating when and where satellites will be visible from any location on Earth.
JTRACK Real-time tracking of hundreds of satellites, in both 2 and 3 dimensions!

Asteroids

Asteroids. A great introduction, with lots of related links and resources.
Spaceguard Survey. Details of a large effort to guard against the threat of asteroid and cometary impacts.
2000 SG344 Asteroid to Rendezvous with Earth in 2030? Scientists have recently discovered a new object headed for a close encounter with Earth. It will occur on 21 September 2030.
