Three Lectureships

In a major recruitment initiative, the Institute for Astronomy (IfA) in the University of Edinburgh, at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, intends to appoint three new members of academic staff. Two of these will be at lecturer level; the third position may be at a more senior level, depending on experience of applicants.

We are looking for candidates with internationally leading research records to join the current research staff at the IfA (12 academics; 22 postdocs; 28 postgraduates). Our research strengths include testing cosmological models using large-scale structure and gravitational lensing; observations of high-redshift galaxies and active galaxies; stellar populations in nearby galaxies; modeling of the intergalactic medium; modelling of the formation of stars and planetary systems. There is no restriction on area of application, although we are particularly interested in candidates in the areas of local-universe cosmology and cosmological model testing, providing synergy with our involvement in the Gaia and Euclid satellite missions.

The posts are available from September 2012, with some flexibility on start date. Further particulars of the positions and details of the applications procedure are available from the University of Edinburgh Vacancies.

The University of Edinburgh is also advertising the broad initiative of Chancellor's Fellowships. Applicants for the current positions will be considered a candidate for a Chancellor's Fellowship and need not submit a separate application.

Informal enquiries should be directed to the Head of the IfA, Professor John Peacock (email: jap).

Salary Scale: Grade 8 £36862 - £44016. One appointment may be at grade 9 (£46696 - £52556) or grade 10 in exceptional cases (from £54133).

Closing date: 1 March 2012.
