I am a Professor at the Institute for Astronomy which is part of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh.   I lead the stellar populations research group which has benefited from funding from STFC, the European Commission and the Leverhulme Trust.  I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

My research focuses on understanding how nearby galaxies form and evolve through detailed analyses of their present-day structure, kinematics and stellar content, as well as their past star formation and chemical enrichment histories. Current work exploits state-of-the-art ground-based imaging surveys such as PAndAS and Pan-STARRS PS1, wide-field observations with some of the world’s largest telescopes (Subaru, VLT, Gemini), high precision photometric observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and high quality spectra from the Gaia-ESO survey.  I am also involved in planning for the scientific exploitation of data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia and Euclid missions, as well as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope.
